For most people, sunshine means fun. For the photosensitive community, it can mean danger, isolation, and loss of the simple moments most take for granted; a walk outside, a day at camp, or a trip to the park. I was diagnosed with EPP at the age of two along with my brother who was eighteen. I am grateful to be a part of Shadow Jumpers, a nonprofit that creates safe, joyful experiences for children and families who must live life differently because of their sensitivity to sunlight. Through programs like Sun Escape Weekend and financial assistance for families in crisis, Shadow Jumpers gives kids who usually hide from the sun a chance to shine safely, confidently, and together.
This cause means a lot to me because I’ve seen how powerful it is when someone finally feels seen, included, and understood. Every donation funds camp adventures, care packages, and year-round community support for families navigating a life most people can’t imagine.
Your donation, no matter the size, helps turn “I can’t” into “I did.”
******UPDATE****** We initially aimed to raise $125,000, which felt ambitious. Thanks to your support, we've exceeded that, reaching $174,901 with six days still to go. Every extra dollar will help more photosensitive families. Achieving $200,000 would be an incredible milestone and too real of an opportunity to pass up. WE ARE GOING FOR IT and have updated our goal here accordingly.
Spin Away the Sun is an exhilarating charity event, similar to a bike-a-thon or a walk-a-thon but on stationary bikes, designed to support the Shadow Jumpers nonprofit organization. What started as a single ride in Los Angeles has grown into a national movement, now spanning rides in New Jersey, California, and Boston. Now entering its sixth year, riders, donors, and supporters of Spin Away the Sun have raised over $230,000 to help families impacted by photosensitivity, reaching an incredible milestone of $116,000 fundraised last year.
Shadow Jumpers is a 501c3 nonprofit that provides meaningful experiences and a sense of community to individuals and families living with photosensitive conditions. Since 2017, we have provided sun-proof vacations, home renovations, financial assistance, and transportation services, along with a safe camp experience tailored specifically for photosensitivity. Founded by patients, caregivers, and medical professionals specifically from the rare photosensitive community, our mission isn’t to find a cure for these conditions but to be the leading voice in living with these unique circumstances regarding the sun and harmful light.
